SUMMARY:The Heritage Book Club Celebrates America250NC\, Spring Selection: A Perfect Frenzy by Andrew Lawler
DESCRIPTION:The South has always been a few steps off the pathway that the rest of the country has followed. And there were factors involved that may seem counterintuitive to the overarching ideals of the Revolution in the Southern decision to come to Massachusetts’s aid. One of these was Lord Dunmore’s proclamation as royal governor of Virginia to offer freedom to escaped enslaved men in exchange for military service suppressing rebels\, and the burning of Norfolk\, which was a hotbed of Loyalists. Virginia’s decision was important because it was the largest and most prosperous colony. We delve deeply into these matters with Andrew Lawler’s A Perfect Frenzy (in-person and virtual options available). \n\n\n\nThe event will take place in the Board Room at the High Point Public Library. \n\n\n\nTHIS EVENT IS DESIGNED FOR THOSE 18+

SUMMARY:The True Story of Juneteenth: How Freedom Came to Texas & How We Celebrate
DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth is now a national holiday\, but do you know the real story of how freedom came to over 300\,000 enslaved people in Texas?  It’s a story that has been altered or left out of this country’s historical narrative for far too long.  This presentation brings the story to life by replacing myths and omissions with documented facts about the events of June 19\, 1865\, that took place “where it all began”\, Galveston\, Texas. And\, we’ll introduce you to some of the people who made sure the state of Texas and the entire nation celebrate this important historical event\, chief among them is the Grandmother of Juneteenth\, Mrs. Opal Lee. FREE Attendance is hybrid for those who stay in the Guilford County area of North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Limits of Freedom Exhibit at Greensboro Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:Limits of Freedom explores the lives of free and enslaved African Americans in Guilford and Rockingham Counties in early U.S. history.
