SUMMARY:Limits of Freedom Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Limits of Freedom explores the lives of free and enslaved African Americans in Guilford and Rockingham Counties in early U.S. history. Their experiences\, from service in the Revolutionary War to work along the Dan River\, illustrate the lived reality of people during a time of slavery. Passed down through the generations\, the stories in this exhibit help bring about a better understanding of the early days of two of North Carolina’s most influential counties.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibit will be at the High Point Museum from February 7 to March 7 during museum hours. Please visit the museum’s website below for hours.

SUMMARY:Black History Month Cinema: "Cooley High"
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 100 Years of Black History Month\n\n\n\n\n\nCelebrate 100 years of Black History Month as we present a film series of classic African-American cinema. Cooley High (rated PG)\, a 1975 comedy-drama drama was one of the best and successful of 1970’s blaxploitation films. It stars Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs\, Glynn Turman\, and Garrett Morris. Often called ‘the black American Graffiti’ but with far more vitality and more variety\, Cooley High takes a nostalgic\, poignant and hilariously funny look at black teen life in 1960’s Chicago. It’s 1964. JFK has just been assassinated. Motown records rule the airwaves. And two high school students discover themselves and the taste of freedom for the first time. Preach\, a serious-minded writer\, and his best friend Cochise\, a basketball hero headed for college\, are best friends at Cooley High. Together they cut classes to go to the zoo\, crash parties\, put the hustle on some hustlers and dream about getting out of their impoverished\, rough neighborhood. But when an innocent joy ride makes them the targets of two vengeful hoods\, their already uncertain futures seem even further out of reach. Popcorn and snacks will be served. Contact Ronald Headen at 336-412-6199 or email for more information.
